The clean, clear water, the sun-kissed and easy-to-get-to beaches, but especially the pleasant temperatures that accompany you on walks with breathtaking views are what makes Lake Garda one of a kind and a place that enchants thousands of tourists every year. The lake was originally known as "Benaco" and has been visited and loved since Roman times - the poet Catullus, aesthete par excellence, chose it as his home and built one of the most interesting architectural examples of the Roman style ("Le grotte di Catullo at Sirmione"). The beauty of Lake Garda has spanned all periods of history, proof of its immortal beauty. It has attracted countless thousands of tourists, many of whom, enchanted by the climate, the nature and the architecture of this "sea of the Alps" have made their homes on its shores. As well as Catullus, other poets have written of the marvels of Benaco: Gabriele D'Annunzio, Joyce and, above all, Goethe, who found the words to describe Lake Garda better than anyone.
"Do you know the town where the cedar flowers, and golden oranges burn among the dark foliage?..." Yes: "also there does a gentle breeze blow from the blue sky; and the myrtle rises in silence and the laurel grows high." |
