With Aida, on 10 August, 1913 in the first centenary year of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi, the first operatic season of Verona took place.
The happy moment was shared by the Veronese tenor Giovanni Zenatello who, with his wife Maria Gay and some friends, claimed that the grandiosity of the amphitheatre was the ideal spot for such a spectacular opera.
Since then, right up till today, every summer in The Arena there are representations of operas performed in the open-air. The perfect acoustics, the cavea creating the perfect stage set, the opera programme, all come together to create the Veronese operatic season making a not-to-be-missed date for opera lovers all over the world.
